Reliability is a user-facing mobile feature

Mobile UX is not only typography, spacing and animation. It is also what happens when:

• The connection disappears during a request
• The user backgrounds the app
• An operation takes longer than expected
• Cached data becomes stale
• The user returns after several minutes

While working on a field application, I had to design around unreliable network conditions.

I added network awareness, explicit timeout states, retry paths, request cleanup, and clear feedback when an action could not be completed. Server data was managed separately from temporary interface state so reconnecting and refetching could happen predictably.

None of these changes made the screens more attractive. But they made the application feel more dependable, which is often more important.

On mobile, reliability is a user-facing feature.
